I was gifted this book years ago from a patient with whom I have a long-standing relationship. I learned so much from them and was able to shift my view on gender constructs in large part from their willingness to share their experiences as a transgender person. We initially worked together to treat panic attacks and social anxiety, so they were familiar with an exposure-based model. We adapted the model so that each time the person told a colleague, friend or family member about their transition it became an exercise in exposing them to discomfort or possible criticism or rejection. From my perspective, this person was met with overwhelming welcome and acceptance, from all different demographics. I encourage anyone who wants a basic and easy-to-understand sense of gender constructs to read this book, research the website, or pass it along as a resource to a friend. Find the website and the genderbread person here.
